Many people want to talk to me about social networking as a way to market their websites. Discussions about Facebook, LinkedIn and Biznik are animated – filled with a sort of excitement about the possibilities. All of us can see how working those sites can really help our businesses.
People get a little dismissive about MySpace: “that’s just for kids.” I tend to agree – maybe not with the whole “kids” part. But I do agree that MySpace is limited in potential as a business networking agent.
The conversation, which began with excitement and then moved to dismissive, then takes a turn to the baffling as Twitter comes up. The most common description of Twitter: “I just don’t get it.”
Well, on behalf of all of you, I am going to try to “get it.” Below is a link to a good, brief article that talks about Twitter as a tool of leadership, a tool that allows you to “amplify your influence.”
I especially like the part that mentions your ability to use Twitter to brieffly (140 characters or less) tell people what “has your attention.” Sharing the thoughts in your head – as opposed to sharing the daily drudgery of life – is a far more interesting and potentially more useful way to maximize your Twitter account. Your followers will thank you.
