New Course: Blogging With Wordpress

Posted by Rob Patton | No Comments

WordpressWe are pleased to introduce a new course on Blogging with Wordpress. The course will be offered through Fenixworkshops. You will leave the course with your own working blog, ready for you to use.

Why would you want a blog? There are many reasons. A well-designed blog allows you to add articles, edit articles, create links and basically have a website without the hassle of knowing anything about website design. A blog can help your search engine performance tremendously because it creates two things search engines love: relevant incoming links to your main site and changing content. Blogs also allow your readers to respond to your articles easily. This means you can gain refreshed content that you don’t even have to create.

Why Wordpress? There are many types of “blogging software,” and most of them are very good. At Transmutation Sciences, we like Wordpress because you can create search engine friendly blogs, the system is highly customizable and it’s free.

There are two types of blogs: owner-hosted and blog-hosted. An owner-hosted blog would exist on your site, as a special section. It is also possible to design an entire site using Wordpress (in fact, this site is based on a Wordpress blog.) The benefits of an owner-hosted blog is that it more customizable, more search engine friendly and it creates changing content on your domain name. Here is an example of a Wordpress Blog that has been “attached” to an existing site: go to www.paulhrichard.com and click on “Soul Blog.” Blog-hosted blog sites become a part of the directory of all blogs hosted with that company. So, if you have a Wordpress blog, its address will be something like “yourblog.wordpress.com.” Because it is hosted by someone else, the blog is more limited in how it can look. However, the advantage of this type of blog is that you can use it to create highly-relevant links to your main site.

Our course will teach you how to set up and maintain a blog-hosted blog. You will leave the class with your site all set up and ready for you to write! We will offer upgrade packages for people who want to also add their owner-hosted blog to their site (or create a complete Wordpress site.) The skills you acquire in the course will apply to any type of blog you create.

There are two sections of this course currently scheduled:

  • May 1 and May 8, Thursday Evening from 7-9:30 pm.
  • June 26, July 3, Thursday Evening from 7-9:30 pm.

Each course is five hours, spread over two nights, one week apart. The course fee is $149.
