Call To Action - Save The Oregon State Hospital
I am involved in an effort to help save as much of the historic “J-Building” as possible on the campus of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem.
This sprawling building is of great historical significance for many reasons.
It is one of the oldest structures in the city and in the state. Construction began in 1883 and was completed over many phases and years.
It is the setting and filming location for one of the greatest movies ever made: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
More than most other old buildings, the J-Building of the Oregon State Hospital represents countless stories of the people who came there to get well. Not all of those stories are pleasant and happy, but all are worth keeping.
The State of Oregon has decided to build two new state mental health institutions. They have decided to site one of those hospitals on the current site in Salem. The other hospital will be in Junction City.
There appears to be plenty of land on the current site in Salem to provide several alternatives to tearing down the historic building.
A small group of historic property activists has formed to advocate for saving the J-Building.
