Sustainable Internet Marketing

Welcome to the Workshops Section

How It All Started and Why It’s Important

A few years back, I was approached by the Small Business Development Center of Clackamas Community College with the idea that I might present some information about what I do at the Oregon Small Business Fair (OSBF.) I immediately agreed and presented to a full room at the 2006 OSBF – the first year it was held at the Oregon Convention Center.

Since then, I have taught workshops on search engine optimization and internet marketing in a number of venues – including repeat appearances at the 2007 and 2008 OSBF. I am an instructor for the Small Business Development Center, the Oregon Small Business Fair, the River City Marketing Team, Transnation Title, Ladies Who Launch, and Keller-Williams Realty.

I enjoy the opportunity to “decode” the internet to a certain degree and to explain how the search engines view websites.

As we move into a world where the internet is our most readily available source of information for ALL topics, it is clear that the search engines are the gateways to that information. As I like to say when I meet people: “the search engines are the most effective form of advertising available today.”

How often do you use the search engines to find important information? What sorts of information do you seek there? Are you like many Americans, who are increasingly using the search engines to find LOCAL information?

Some people have asked me why I would want to teach my techniques for search engine optimization. Won’t that hurt my business? In a word: no.

Teaching this material makes me better at it. I learn much from my students, especially about the psychology of searching. I firmly believe that what I do to help people on the search engines can be done by anyone with some motivation and just a little bit of tech savvy. In many cases, people who take my classes learn that they would like to hire my firm to optimize the site. I LOVE those clients because they already understand the process. I always deduct the cost of the workshop from the fee they pay us.
